The humor of working cows....

Any time you have to send cows through a chute it is never a dull moment. Having Dexters makes it so much easier than other cows for so many reasons. Both Marvin and I practice not yelling or moving real quickly when we work our cows. The results have been amazing in that for the most part we are able to get through the chute with no "man" handling but just slowly guiding them to where we need them to go.
Once in the chute things can get pretty interesting. Our bull Dillon is well built and the largest cow we have. He weighs in at over 1,000 lbs and has grown to be a beautiful bull with personality plus! As we got him into the chute and got his head through the catch he was not real happy to the say the least. He was slinging his head around and trying to let us know he was very impatient to get out of this machine. Marvin had his mouth open as he was trying to work around Dillon's face to place a fly tag in his ear. Dillon gave something Marvin will never forget. As he was slinging his head a large wad of snot flew from Dillon's nose and landed in Marvin's mouth; however the snot was so far back in Marvin's mouth that he had no choice but to swallow it. Needless to say that was not appreciated and we both had a good laugh. Then we were trying to get Dakota up through the chute. She is a rather large girl and you cannot MAKE her move unless SHE wants to move. I mean she just stood there....feet planted firmly with the stance of I am NOT MOVING. Marvin kept directly behind her pushing up against her back end trying to get her to step forward. I hear Marvin shout oh no! Dakota blessed Marvin with a nice load of poop with a bit of pee thrown in for good measure. So Marvin bless his heart did not have the best day today. Dakota FINALLY decided to move forward but I swear that cow was laughing her head off at Marvin. All in all we still had a successful morning of placing fly tags on all the cows.
